New memorial garden commemorates lives lost in crane accident

The community of Kelowna comes together to honor the victims of a tragic crane collapse, highlighting the importance of remembrance and justice.

On a somber Saturday, Kelowna came together to remember a tragic event that shook the community four years ago—a crane collapse that took the lives of five individuals. A heartfelt ceremony unfolded at the newly opened Rise Memorial Garden in Knowles Heritage Park, dedicated to the victims of the Brooklyn Tower accident on July 12, 2021. This garden stands as a powerful reminder of the lives lost and the lasting impact on their families and the community as a whole.

Honoring the Victims

The devastating incident claimed the lives of four construction workers and an office employee from a nearby building. During the ceremony, attendees remembered Cailen Vilness, Jared Zook, Brad Zawislak, Patrick Stemmer, and Eric Stemmer. Their families and friends, alongside hundreds of community members, gathered to share their grief and reflect on this profound loss.

Chris Vilness, the father of victim Cailen, was instrumental in advocating for a permanent memorial. Initially, there was talk of a mural on a building, but through collective efforts, the Rise Memorial Garden became a reality. “It’s very, very wonderful and we’re super happy about it,” Vilness shared, highlighting how meaningful this memorial is for the families involved. Each victim has a dedicated garden space and bench, offering a peaceful spot for reflection.

Calls for Justice

The ceremony served not just as a memorial but also as a call for justice. The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 115 has urged the B.C. Prosecution Service to proceed with a criminal trial regarding the incident. Despite the RCMP recommending charges of criminal negligence resulting in death over a year ago, no charges have been filed yet.

As the investigation by the B.C. Prosecution Service continues, families like Vilness’s are left waiting for answers. “We’re all still waiting for the facts, for some answers,” he expressed, a sentiment many share as they hope for clarity after this lengthy process. Nearly four years have gone by, and the families yearn for a resolution that honors their loved ones and offers the closure they desperately seek.

The Community’s Resilience

The opening of the Rise Memorial Garden is not only a tribute to the victims but also a testament to the resilience of the Kelowna community. It symbolizes a collective commitment to remember those lost and to create a safer environment for all workers in the construction industry. The garden serves as a place for healing, reflection, and remembrance, reminding us of life’s fragility and the vital role of community support during tragic times.

As the community gathers around this memorial, it powerfully illustrates that while the pain of loss may never fully fade, the connections forged in grief and remembrance can lead to meaningful changes and a more united community as they move forward.
