Oble Unveils New Series at Mipcom: Season Two and How to Kill Your Sister

As the prestigious Mipcom event unfolds in Cannes, boutique production and distribution company Oble is making significant strides by introducing two new series to its portfolio. These additions reflect the company’s commitment to innovative storytelling and engaging narratives that appeal to global audiences.

The first title, Segunda Temporada (translated as Second Season), presents viewers with a seven-part Spanish comedy-drama commissioned by Filmin. This series reunites the acclaimed creative team behind the award-winning series Autodefensa, which won the prestigious Best Short Format Series award at Series Mania in 2024.

Director and writer Miguel Ángel Blanca, recognized as a rising Spanish talent by Variety in 2021, collaborates with co-writers Berta Prieto and Víctor Diago.

Exploring Segunda Temporada

Set in the vibrant city of Barcelona, Segunda Temporada follows the life of Paula, a former literary prodigy striving to reclaim her identity amidst the chaotic cultural landscape.

The series comprises self-contained episodes, featuring Prieto reprising her role as the protagonist, now joined by Adan Domínguez.

Paula’s journey is fraught with challenges as she navigates a world filled with mediocre celebrities and the specter of fading fame.

The logline emphasizes her struggle as she takes on precarious jobs, faces creative exhaustion, and searches for her next significant breakthrough. Oble describes the series as a unique examination of the absurdities accompanying life after fame while retaining the authentic and irreverent tone that resonated with fans of Autodefensa.

Production details

Filming for Segunda Temporada is set to commence next week, with an anticipated release date in 2026. The production will be handled by Boogaloo Films, known for their work on Sorella di clausura, in collaboration with the upscale Spanish-Portuguese SVOD service Filmin, alongside Canada and Oble.

How to kill your sister: a dark comedy

In addition to Segunda Temporada, Oble has introduced another compelling title at Mipcom: the dark tragi-comedy entitled How to Kill Your Sister. This series premiered at Canneseries and garnered critical acclaim in April before launching on the Belgian streaming platform Streamz and the commercial channel Play4 in early September. The production is a joint effort between FBO from Belgium and Germany’s MadeForFilm, a subsidiary of Banijay, along with ZDF Neo.

Co-created and penned by Pedro Elia and Evelien Broekaert, the narrative revolves around Anna, portrayed by Emma Rotsaert, who reappears in her sister Kat’s life after an eight-year hiatus, bringing along a coffin. This shocking gesture serves as Anna’s attempt to seek closure regarding her sister’s abandonment following their parents’ passing.

Journey of discovery

Unpacking the complex dynamics between the sisters, it becomes evident that Anna’s wild nature is overwhelming for Kat, who has opted for a subdued existence with a controlling partner. In a twist of fate, Anna claims she is terminally ill and insists that Kat join her on one last adventure. The pair embark on a hilariously dark road trip through Flanders and Spain. Director and co-writer Geirnaert expressed a desire to blend extreme comedy with poignant drama in this unique series.

Oble describes How to Kill Your Sister as a careful balance of humor and tragedy, offering a heartfelt exploration of grief, forgiveness, and the intricacies of family relationships. Standout performances from Marjan De Schutter and Emma Rotsaert elevate the narrative, bringing depth and authenticity to the emotional landscape of the show.

Oble’s diverse slate at Mipcom

In addition to these two new series, Oble presents a diverse lineup at Mipcom, including the Norwegian comedy Nepobaby, crafted by renowned showrunner Henriette Steenstrup. This show has secured distribution deals in English-speaking territories, including CBC Gem in Canada and SBS in Australia, alongside agreements with TV2 Denmark and SVT Sweden. Nepobaby has already earned accolades for its screenplay and ensemble cast at Canneseries, with its premiere slated for October 23 on TV2 Play in Norway.
