Pony.ai and Uber Expand Robotaxi Fleet Across Europe

The landscape of autonomous driving in Europe is evolving rapidly, with Chinese firms finding a more welcoming regulatory environment. Pony.ai, a leader in autonomous vehicle technology, is at the forefront of this transformation. The company’s founder and CEO, James Peng, noted a significant shift in Europe’s approach to autonomous driving, highlighting a growing openness to pilot projects and commercial applications.

This shift is exemplified by the expanding partnership between Pony.ai and Uber. The two companies are planning to deploy a fleet of more than 2,000 robotaxis across Europe, building on their successful collaboration in Zagreb. This initiative marks a substantial leap from individual pilot projects to large-scale commercial operations.

Expanding the Robotaxi Fleet

Pony.ai and Uber are aiming to introduce their autonomous vehicle services in four additional European cities, although the specific locations and timeline have not yet been disclosed. The partnership leverages Pony.ai’s Level 4 autonomous driving technology and Uber’s global mobility platform. At Level 4, vehicles can operate fully autonomously within a defined area without human intervention.

The joint deployment model involves local partners who handle various aspects of the operation, including financing, vehicle ownership, and day-to-day fleet management. For instance, in Zagreb, Verne manages the fleet while Pony.ai provides the autonomous driving technology and Uber connects the service with customers.

Proven Experience and Future Goals

Pony.ai’s experience in China, where it operates paid, fully driverless robotaxi services in major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, has been instrumental in its success. The company has achieved city-wide breakeven unit economics in multiple markets, validating its commercially sustainable model.

In addition to the expansion in Europe, Pony.ai and Uber are also planning joint operations in the Middle East. This strategic move reflects their shared commitment to bringing safe and reliable robotaxi services to a broader audience. Dr. James Peng emphasized the importance of this expanded agreement, stating, “This expanded agreement marks an important new phase in the partnership between Pony.ai and Uber. It reflects our shared commitment to bringing safe, reliable Robotaxi services to more European cities.”

Collaborative Efforts and Future Prospects

Sarfraz Maredia, Global Head of Autonomous Mobility & Delivery at Uber, highlighted the significance of moving from individual launches to repeatable commercial scale. He noted, “Together with Pony.ai, we’re combining advanced autonomous technology with Uber’s hybrid platform, on-the-ground experience, and operational excellence to build a model that can quickly and reliably expand across cities.”

Pony.ai’s collaboration with Uber is part of its broader growth strategy, which includes expanding into new markets and deploying fleets at a regional scale. The company’s Virtual Driver technology, which integrates proprietary software, hardware, and services, enables the mass production and deployment of autonomous vehicles across various transportation use cases.

As the regulatory environment in Europe continues to evolve, the partnership between Pony.ai and Uber is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of autonomous mobility. With their combined expertise and resources, they aim to build sustained commercial operations at scale across Europe and beyond.
