In a political climate fraught with economic uncertainty, President Trump‘s approval ratings have reached new lows. The latest NPR/PBS News/Marist poll reveals that only 36% of Americans approve of Trump’s This widening gap underscores the growing dissatisfaction among voters, particularly regarding the president’s handling of the economy.

Despite a recent drop of about 40 cents per gallon, the financial burden remains substantial. This economic pressure is influencing household decisions, with 45% of Americans opting to forgo summer vacations this year, primarily due to cost concerns.
Economic Discontent Across Demographic Lines
The erosion of Trump’s support is evident across various demographic groups. Independent voters disapprove of his performance by a significant margin, with 64% expressing discontent. Similarly, 94% of Democrats and 18% of Republicans share this sentiment. Approval ratings have also declined among Gen Z (25%)Gen X (36%) and those with a household income below $50,000 a year (34%).

Even among white Americans without a college degree, approval for Trump’s economic handling has dropped to one-third down from nearly half in.
Voter Sentiments and Midterm Elections
As the midterm elections approach, the economic discontent is reflecting in voter enthusiasm. Democrats are showing more eagerness to vote, seeing a potential path to regain control of both the House and Senate. Notably, 22% of Republicans express disapproval of Trump’s economic management, highlighting a shift within his own party.
Regina Kulenga, a 36-year-old Trump voter from Georgia, voiced her frustration, stating, “The economy is suffering a lot right now.” She expressed uncertainty about voting in the midterms, feeling that Trump’s actions since returning to office have been a “slap in the face.” Kulenga’s family members are struggling with rising costs for transportation and groceries, despite her driving an electric car and not being directly affected by high gas prices.
The Impact of Economic Policies
The economic challenges are multifaceted, with high inflation, the ongoing war in Iran, and higher gas prices contributing to the Trump administration policies around tariffs are also playing a role in the economic landscape. These factors are influencing household decisions, with cost being a significant factor for those planning or forgoing summer vacations.
Despite the economic woes, a majority of Republicans continue to support Trump. Greg Votel, a 68-year-old retired law enforcement officer from Minnesota, believes that Trump “can only do so much” given the opposition from Congress. Votel argues that it will take time for Trump’s plans to come to fruition, stating, “It doesn’t happen overnight. It’s going to take some time; it’s going to probably take at least two administrations. Trump’s got the ball rolling.“
The survey, conducted between June 8-11 with a margin of error of +/- 3.0 percentage points, highlights the real-world impact of economic policies on American households. As the political landscape evolves, the economic concerns will likely continue to shape voter sentiments and midterm election outcomes.
