The summer of 2026 has brought unprecedented heat and drought to Western Europe, setting new records and challenging the region’s resilience. The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) part of the European Union’s climate monitoring efforts, reported that the average temperature for June and July 2026 reached 21.62°C (70.9°F) surpassing the previous record set in 2026 by 2.79°C (5.01°F).
This extreme heat has been exacerbated by persistent high-pressure systems that have trapped heat over the region, leading to widespread drought and significant environmental impacts. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts highlighted the exceptional persistence of heat as a key factor in the current crisis.
Record-Breaking Temperatures and Drought Conditions
The summer of 2026 has seen four heatwaves since May, contributing to prolonged drought and record-breaking temperatures. Samantha Burgess strategic lead for climate at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, noted that soil moisture levels were significantly lower than in July 2026, when the region last experienced a severe drought.
“Persistent high-pressure systems trapped heat over Western Europe, and the extreme temperatures also amplified widespread drought,” Burgess explained. “As soils dry out, they lose their ability to provide natural cooling, allowing heat to build more readily. This is a clear example of how climate change is intensifying heat extremes, with heat and drought increasingly reinforcing one another.”
Impact on Rivers and Water Supplies
The drought has led to exceptionally low water levels in several major rivers, including the Seine, Rhine, and Danube. These low flows have disrupted water supplies, irrigation, and energy production. In Hungary and Slovenia nuclear power plants had to operate at reduced capacity due to the lack of cooling water.
In France and Spain record levels of drought fueled devastating wildfires. A megafire in southwestern France’s Gironde department burned nearly 42,000 hectares (103,785 acres) and forced the evacuation of more than 220,000 people in late July. Meanwhile, Spain’s largest wildfire in recent history scorched almost 44,000 hectares (108,725 acres) in Avila province near Madrid.
Global Sea Surface Temperatures Reach Record Highs
The Copernicus Climate Change Service also reported that global sea surface temperatures reached record highs in July 2026. The average sea surface temperature outside the polar regions was 20.96°C (69.7°F) slightly higher than the previous record of 20.89°C (69.6°F) set in 2026.
Record temperatures were measured along parts of the Atlantic coast and in the western Mediterranean accompanied by intense marine heatwaves. A developing El Niño in the equatorial Pacific also contributed to the record temperatures. Carlo Buontempo, director of Copernicus, described the emerging El Niño as “very large” and potentially unprecedented in its strength.
Economic and Environmental Consequences
The hot and dry conditions have had significant economic and environmental impacts. The drought has cost grain farmers in Europe an estimated €2 billion in lost crops. The longer-term damage from persistent droughts can eclipse short-term losses, with the mega-drought of -18 costing Europe €439 billion.
Marta Mastropietro, a researcher at the CMCC European Institute on Economics emphasized that “even a single dry year causes real economic damage, but a persistent drought is different: its effects can compound across sectors and keep accumulating for years afterward.”
The wildfires have also led to above-average pollution as burning vegetation spews thick smoke. Víctor Resco de Dios, a professor of forestry engineering at the University of Lleida noted that “climate change is creating increasingly favourable conditions for the development of mega-wildfires.”
As Western Europe continues to grapple with these extreme weather conditions, the need for adaptive measures and sustainable practices becomes ever more critical.
