Ricardo Parias: The Journalist Imprisoned for Reporting on Immigration Enforcement

In the heart of California, about an hour and a half from Disneyland, lies the Adelanto ICE Processing Center. This is where Ricardo Parias a journalist known as Richard Noticias LA has been detained for over 300 days. His case has sparked national outrage and raised serious questions about the treatment of journalists and immigrants in the United States.

Parias, who built a substantial following on social media by reporting on crime stories in overlooked California neighborhoods, was honored by the Los Angeles City Council last year. However, his journalistic endeavors led to a series of violent encounters with federal agents, culminating in his prolonged detention.

The Incident and Aftermath

On June 13, 2026 Parias arrived at an immigration raid in South LA to film the event. According to witnesses, a federal agent ran into him with a vehicle, causing injury. Parias was handcuffed and left on a sidewalk without medical attention. Eventually, a Good Samaritan took him to the hospital, where he was treated while still handcuffed.

Four months later, on Parias was driving near downtown Los Angeles when multiple unmarked vehicles surrounded him. Federal agents smashed his window and shot him in the elbow during the ensuing confrontation. Parias was taken into custody and later charged with assault on a federal officer. Prosecutors claimed he had been trying to avoid deportation agents for months, but evidence began to undermine this narrative.

The Legal Battle and Conditions in Detention

The government’s account of the incident was challenged by bystander videos and the lack of critical context in the prosecution’s version. Parias was denied proper medical care for his gunshot wound, both in the hospital and during his initial court hearing. His lawyer’s request for a hug from his teenage son was also denied, highlighting the harsh conditions he faced.

Parias was eventually granted bond in his criminal case, but accepting it would have meant immediate transfer to an immigration facility with potentially worse care. He was eventually transferred to the Adelanto facility, where he continued to report on the horrid conditions, including worms in drinking water and cockroaches in cells. His situation inspired legislation addressing medical neglect in immigration facilities.

The Fight for Justice

Despite the mounting evidence and public outcry, Parias remains in detention. The government plans to transfer him to a facility in San Diego, which will make it even harder for his family and lawyers to visit. His case has drawn attention to the broader issues of journalist rights and immigration enforcement in the United States.

The question now is what America is willing to let happen to a journalist. Parias’s case highlights the need for accountability and reform in the treatment of immigrants and journalists alike.
