In a world where resilience is often tested, Ryan Straschnitzki stands as a beacon of hope and determination. Following the devastating Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018, which left him paralyzed from the chest down, Ryan’s life has been a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity.
Now, as he embarks on a new chapter aiming for the 2028 Paralympics, his story is set to captivate audiences through the six-part series, We Were Broncos, airing on AMI starting May 26.
From tragedy to transformation
The Humboldt Broncos bus crash was a tragedy that shook the sports community and the nation.
Sixteen lives were lost, and many were left with life-altering injuries. Ryan, who was only 20 at the time, faced a daunting new reality. However, instead of succumbing to despair, he channeled his energy into sports, initially joining Alberta’s para hockey team.
His journey through sports has not only been about competition but also about personal growth and self-discovery.
A new passion: wheelchair basketball
In July 2023, Ryan made a pivotal decision to pursue wheelchair basketball, aiming to join the Canadian Paralympic Team for the 2028 Games.
This shift in focus has reignited his competitive spirit and provided him with a fresh goal. “I think at the beginning of the basketball season I kind of doubted myself a little bit,” he shared. “By the end of the season, I was a lot more confident in myself and realized I have the ability to make it where I want to make it, if I put the work in.” His determination is palpable, and it reflects the mindset of many young athletes today who strive to redefine their limits.
Sharing his story with the world
Ryan’s journey is not just about sports; it’s also about sharing his experiences and inspiring others. The documentary series We Were Broncos offers a glimpse into his life, showcasing not only the struggles he faced but also his triumphs.
As he promotes the series, Ryan hopes to shed light on his personal story beyond the crash. “I think a lot of people know the story of Humboldt and what happened. But I think a lot of people don’t really know my story … my perspective and where I’m at now,” he explained. This desire to be recognized for his achievements in sports and his charity work, Straz Strong, highlights the importance of narrative in shaping public perception.
As Ryan continues to navigate his path, he remains committed to his goals and the message of resilience. His journey serves as a powerful reminder that even in the face of unimaginable challenges, the human spirit can rise, adapt, and thrive. With the support of friends, family, and the community, Ryan Straschnitzki is not just surviving; he is thriving, and his story is just beginning.
