The 38-year-old athlete from Squamish, B.C. was last seen on Tuesday, September 5, 2026 attempting a record on the iconic Matterhorn a towering peak that straddles the border between Switzerland and Italy.
McCrystal, a seasoned skyrunner and mountaineer, was attempting to break a mountain-running record when she vanished. Her disappearance has sparked an extensive search operation, involving helicopter sweeps and ground teams from both the Italian and Swiss sides of the mountain.
The Search Efforts and Challenges
The search for McCrystal has been a complex operation, hampered by the treacherous terrain of the Matterhorn. Initial efforts involved a large air ambulance helicopter, but rescuers soon switched to a smaller aircraft capable of maneuvering closer to the mountain’s sheer rock faces and narrow gullies. Despite these efforts, no trace of McCrystal has been found.
Valerio Segor a spokesperson for the Valle d’Aosta mountain rescue service explained the challenges faced by the search teams. “We moved to a much smaller helicopter that can go closer to the cliffs and see in the couloirs,” he said. “They didn’t see anything.” The last confirmed sighting of McCrystal was above the Jean-Antoine Carrel hut at an altitude of approximately 3,830 meters, where she was seen heading toward the summit.
Rescuers also employed advanced technology, including a helicopter-mounted RECCO detector a radar system designed to locate compatible reflectors in outdoor clothing and equipment. However, these efforts proved fruitless, with no signals detected on either side of the mountain. Attempts to establish a signal from McCrystal’s cellphone also failed, leaving search teams with few leads.

Her friends and colleagues describe her as a highly respected figure in the skyrunning community. Riley Webb a close friend from McCrystal’s hometown, spoke highly of her character and dedication. “She was very thoughtful and compassionate. Always there for you. Truly always there for you,” he said.
McCrystal’s passion for the sport was evident in her recent achievements. Earlier this year, she won the 4 Refugios Non-Stop race in Argentina, covering roughly 40 kilometers and 3,350 meters of elevation gain. She had also recently tested herself on the Matterhorn, completing a solo ascent and descent from Zermatt via the Swiss Hörnli Ridge in just over six hours.
Her disappearance has left the skyrunning community in shock. Athletics Canada issued a statement expressing their concern and support for McCrystal and her family. “Kalie is a highly respected athlete and a valued member of the worldwide skyrunning community,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with Kalie, her family, and everyone close to her at this extremely difficult time.”

Mountain guides who climb the Matterhorn nearly every day continue to keep an eye out for any signs of McCrystal. “We’ve got the mountain guides that climb that mountain nearly every day,” Segor said. “They are looking. If they see something, of course, they will tell us.”
