Selena Gomez had haters slamming her tanned complexion at the 2018 Met Gala with a cheeky social media post. Now, as the Met Gala 2021 returns in less than a week, the singer and founder of Rare Beauty reveals details about the self-tanning fail she’ll never forget.

When Gomez, 29, showed viewers her makeup routine for a night out for a Vogue Beauty Secrets video , she decided to share “a funny story about a little self-tanner.”

“For the Met Gala I was getting ready and we wanted to add some color. So I put a little bit of this tanning lotion on and it looked really pretty and very even,” the star explained. “As the night went on, it got a little bit darker.”

Because Gomez was focused on posing on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s famous staircase before heading into the gala, she “didn’t realize” how dark her tan had become. “I’m at the Met Gala, basically one of the most prestigious and beautiful events, and I’m walking around trying to look beautiful,” she said.

As Gomez sat at her table inside the event, she had a chance to take a look at the red carpet photos that were popping up on the Internet.

“I look at a picture of me when I sit down and I’m completely orange,” she says with a laugh. “I was like, ‘This is going to be terrible because I’m going to get eaten alive for this.'”

Instead of dwelling on the beauty mistake, Gomez decided to make fun of the mishap.

“So I had my security videotape me, because my first reaction was just to get out of there,” she said. “So I’m running to my car. Literally, I’m hauling ass to my car and then I’m going to line it up. I was just saying this is my reaction after seeing my Met Gala photos.”
