Shortly after 9 a.m., the girl pulled a gun from her backpack and fired several shots in a hallway and outside the Rigby school, Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson said.

A teacher disarmed the student and detained her until law enforcement arrived and took her into custody

The victims were transported to Eastern Idaho Regional Center in stable condition, an Idaho Falls Fire Department spokesman told Buzzfeed News.

All three suffered life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover, the hospital’s trauma medical director, Michael Lemon, told reporters.

Lemon said the adult patient was treated and released and he expects the two pediatric patients could be discharged Friday.

He said it was “an absolute blessing” that their injuries were not worse.

“This is the worst nightmare a school district can face,” Jefferson County School District Superintendent Chad Martin said at a news conference.

“We’re preparing for it, but we’re never really prepared.”

Martin said classes would be canceled throughout the district el so families could be together.

“It is still unclear where the student, who was not identified, obtained the firearm and what the motive for the shooting was.” He added.

The shooting was captured by the school’s security system.
