A 74-year-old woman was critically injured after being hit by a taxi in the early hours of 15 February 2026 near 138 Java Road, North Point. Emergency crews found her semi-conscious at the scene and rushed her to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses say the woman, identified by police as Ms. Lam, had been pushing a cart along the carriageway when a taxi struck her and bent the cart. Passersby and first responders applied immediate first aid before paramedics took over; dispatch records put the call to emergency services at about 2:46 a.m.
Police arrested the taxi driver, a 79-year-old man surnamed Chan, on suspicion of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm. Officers say Chan stayed at the scene, passed a roadside breath test and later gave statements. His remark to reporters—that the cart “suddenly” moved into the road—is being checked against witness accounts and physical evidence.
Investigators have cordoned off and photographed the scene, logged the position of the damaged cart and are collecting CCTV footage from nearby cameras. Forensic teams are examining the taxi, road markings and any trace evidence to reconstruct the vehicle’s path, estimate speed and identify the point of impact.
Detectives continue to take witness statements and analyse video. The inquiry will look at driver behavior, pedestrian actions, visibility and road conditions to build a timeline and determine whether criminal or traffic charges are warranted beyond the initial detention.
Local advocates have voiced concern about night-time safety for vulnerable road users, particularly older people and those using improvised carts. Officials say the findings could prompt practical measures—better street lighting, clearer crossings or targeted public-safety campaigns—if systemic hazards are identified.
Police have appealed to anyone with footage or information to come forward. Authorities stress they will only finalise any charges after a full review of forensic results and witness testimony. Further developments will be announced as the investigation proceeds.
