On the afternoon of Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, a violent episode unfolded at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. Police reports indicate that a 16-year-old resident entered the campus by shooting at locked doors and unleashed gunfire inside the building. The assault resulted in the deaths of three youngsters—aged 5, 8 and 11—and a 54-year-old teacher. Two additional victims, a 7-year-old student and another staff member, were rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Emergency services received the first call at 12:59 p.m. PT when a driver reported being shot at multiple times by someone wielding a long-gun. Moments later, 911 operators logged a surge of calls reporting an active shooter inside the school. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed that officers ordered a lockdown at 1:01 p.m., and within minutes first-responders arrived on the scene.
Chronology of the attack
According to the police timeline, the teenager forced entry by blasting the school’s locked doors, a tactic that allowed him to move quickly through the hallways. As officers secured the perimeter, a bystander—identified only as a local community member—spotted the teen entering the building, pursued him, and discharged a firearm that fatally wounded the suspect. Police discovered the shooter’s body shortly after the officers entered the gymnasium, where the confrontation occurred.
After the suspect was neutralized, law enforcement began a room-by-room evacuation, directing families to a reunification site set up at a nearby church. The school district announced the cancellation of all classes, activities, and athletic events for the following day.
Victims, official reactions and federal involvement
The loss of three children and a teacher has left the Bend community in shock. Governor Tina Kotek expressed her sorrow, thanking teachers, staff, first responders, and the civilian who “heroically intervened to stop further loss of life.” Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook described the incident as an “unthinkable tragedy” and confirmed that the district would provide counseling services to students and staff.
Federal agencies arrived swiftly. FBI Director Kash Patel announced that the bureau was on the ground assisting the investigation, while agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were also dispatched. Authorities have not released the shooter’s identity beyond his age and residence, and it remains unclear whether he was a student or had prior connections to the school.
Eyewitness Caleb Weis who was riding a motorcycle near the campus, described the response as “highly trained and highly prepared,” noting the relative lack of onlookers filming the event compared with previous shootings. The incident has reignited national discussions about firearm accessibilityschool security protocols and the role of civilian intervention in preventing further casualties.
