Her owners, Kaila Watters and her team, faced uncertainty from the moment she was born. Easy was diagnosed with dummy foal syndrome, a condition affecting only about two percent of newborn foals, which severely impacted her ability to function normally.
The Challenges of Dummy Foal Syndrome
Dummy foal syndrome, also known as neonatal maladjustment syndrome, presents a unique set of challenges. As Watters explained, it’s as if the foal’s brain isn’t fully activated. Easy struggled with basic life skills, such as standing and recognizing her mother.
She often found herself stuck in corners, unable to navigate her surroundings. This heartbreaking situation left her owners with a tough decision: to fight for her life or let nature take its course.
Community Support Makes a Difference
Determined not to give up, Watters and her team began intensive treatments for Easy, including innovative therapies like squeeze therapy to stimulate her cognitive function.
However, the road to recovery was not easy, and the costs were mounting. Sending Easy to a veterinary neonatal unit in Prince Edward Island was a significant financial burden. Fortunately, the community rallied around her, contributing over $10,000 through a GoFundMe campaign.
This outpouring of support was crucial in providing the necessary care that Easy needed to survive.

Watters reflects on the journey, acknowledging that horse breeding is not always filled with joy. “There are bad days, and we had a lot of them with Easy initially,” she said.
