The power of storytelling: how community combats loneliness in seniors
In a world where technology often isolates rather than connects, the Life Story Club is redefining community for older adults. Founded in 2019 in Brooklyn, this nonprofit organization offers a unique platform for seniors to share their life experiences, fostering connections that combat the pervasive loneliness many face as they age.
With over 400 members across New York City, the club provides a vital lifeline, helping to mitigate the health risks associated with social isolation.
Building community through shared experiences
The Life Story Club organizes both virtual and in-person gatherings, allowing older adults to come together and share their stories.
These meetings are not just about reminiscing; they are about creating a sense of belonging. Stephanie Yanes, a facilitator for the club, emphasizes the importance of these connections. “This social club becomes their friends, their family, their lifeline,” she explains.
For many members, like 89-year-old Ragaa Mussalli, these gatherings are a highlight of their week. Mussalli, who has been part of the club for five years, shares her rich life experiences, from her childhood in Cairo to her encounters with royalty in England.
“This keeps me alive,” she says, highlighting the emotional support and camaraderie that the club provides.
Innovative approaches to social prescribing
Recognizing the critical need for social interaction among seniors, the Life Story Club has partnered with healthcare providers through the StoryRX Project.
This initiative encourages doctors to “socially prescribe” the club to older adults who may be struggling with loneliness. The results have been promising, with 140 referrals leading to 108 seniors participating in weekly meetings. This innovative approach not only addresses the emotional needs of seniors but also highlights the significant health risks associated with loneliness, which can be as detrimental as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
Creating a safe space for sharing
At the heart of the Life Story Club is the belief that storytelling can heal. Members are encouraged to share their experiences, whether they are humorous, heartbreaking, or simply nostalgic. This safe environment allows individuals to open up about topics they might not discuss with family or friends. For instance, Ina Alfattah, a 76-year-old member, fondly recalls her youth and her friendship with Colin Powell, revealing how these stories foster deeper connections among members. “This community spurs different kinds of conversations that might not happen one-on-one or with a family member,” says Jennifer Wong, the club’s interim executive director. The club also caters to diverse communities, offering meetings in multiple languages and creating spaces for LGBTQ-identifying older adults.
As the Life Story Club continues to grow, it remains dedicated to combating loneliness and fostering a sense of community among seniors. The stories shared within these walls not only entertain but also empower, reminding us all of the importance of connection and the power of shared experiences.
