The landscape for transgender rights has shifted dramatically in recent years, particularly under the administration of former President Donald Trump. This shift has not only affected legislation but has also cast a shadow over community gatherings, such as the biennial Moving Trans History Forward conference held at the University of Victoria. With attendance expectations plummeting by 40%, the implications of political decisions on the trans community are becoming increasingly evident.

Fear and uncertainty among attendees

Aaron Devor, chair of transgender studies at the University of Victoria, expressed concern about the potential drop in attendance at this year’s conference. While the event typically draws around 500 participants, only about 300 are expected this time. The reluctance of American attendees to cross the border stems from fears about returning to the U.S. after the conference. Devor noted, “The difference, I attribute almost entirely to Americans being afraid to leave their own country.” This fear is rooted in the political climate that has fostered an environment of uncertainty and anxiety for many in the trans community.

Political decisions shaping the narrative

The Trump administration’s executive order, which recognizes only two immutable sexes, has sent shockwaves through the trans community. This order mandates that all government-issued identification must reflect the holder’s biological sex at birth, effectively erasing the identities of many nonbinary individuals. Immigration lawyer Adrienne Smith highlighted the misinformation and transphobia propagated during this period, stating, “Trans people have always lived in the shadow of danger, but that danger is much bigger and much closer now.” This sentiment resonates deeply within the community, as many feel increasingly unsafe and marginalized.

Community resilience and adaptation

Despite the challenges, the Moving Trans History Forward conference continues to serve as a vital platform for activists, academics, and artists to share their experiences and research. This year, for the first time, the conference has allowed virtual attendance, providing a lifeline for those unable to travel due to fear or logistical barriers. Devor emphasized the importance of these gatherings, stating that they address crucial issues impacting the trans community both locally and globally. The resilience of the community is evident as they adapt to the changing political landscape while striving to maintain connections and advocate for their rights.

As the trans community navigates these turbulent waters, the importance of solidarity and support becomes paramount. Events like the Moving Trans History Forward conference not only highlight the struggles faced by trans individuals but also celebrate their history and contributions. The ongoing fight for recognition and rights continues, and the community remains steadfast in its pursuit of safety and acceptance.
