In a rare and concerning turn of events, two workers at Frankfurt Airport have tragically died from malaria a disease typically found in tropical regions. The infections are believed to have originated from mosquitoes that arrived on planes from malaria-endemic areas, according to Fraport the airport operator, and the Frankfurt Public Health Department.
The first death occurred in early July, with the cause only being established post-mortem. The second fatality was reported in August. This outbreak has raised significant public health concerns and has prompted a thorough investigation into the source and spread of the infection.
Understanding the outbreak
The outbreak has affected six male workers employed in various roles and areas of the airport. Public health officials are currently analyzing blood samples to determine whether the infections were caused by a single mosquito or multiple mosquitoes. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany’s federal agency for disease control and public health, has confirmed that the four initial cases fell ill between July 4 and 6.
The RKI has emphasized that malaria in Germany almost exclusively affects long-haul travelers who have visited malaria-endemic areas. The transmission of malaria within a German airport is exceptionally rare. The last recorded case of airport malaria in Germany was in 2026, also at Frankfurt Airport.
Prevention and response efforts
In response to the outbreak, Fraport has installed mosquito traps at the airport to capture and analyze the insects. These traps will help determine the species and origin of the mosquitoes. The airport operator has also provided comprehensive information to all employees, encouraging them to seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms.
The World Health Organization (WHO) describes malaria as a disease spread by certain types of mosquitoes biting humans. It is preventable and curable, caused by a parasite, and does not spread from person to person. However, symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening.
The rarity of airport malaria
The Frankfurt Health Department has classified airport malaria as a very rare transmission route outside of malaria-endemic areas. A study recording all cases of airport and baggage-borne malaria in Europe from 1969 to 2026 identified a total of 145 cases, nine of which were in Germany.
The RKI has noted that while there are some Anopheles species in Germany that can transmit malaria pathogens under suitable environmental conditions, such cases have been extremely rare. The lack of a travel history can lead to a delayed diagnosis, which increases the risk of a severe course of the disease.
The outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and preventive measures, even in regions where such diseases are not typically prevalent. As the investigation continues, public health officials are working diligently to contain the outbreak and prevent further infections.
