On Saturday afternoon, around 3:25 p.m. CT a vehicle surged onto the field of the Stryker Soccer Complex in Wichita, Kansas. The abrupt intrusion shattered a routine youth soccer match, turning a typical weekend outing into a scene of devastation.
First responders arrived seconds after multiple 911 calls flooded the dispatch center. Bystanders, some of whom were parents watching their children play, immediately lunged into action, providing life-saving assistance until police and emergency crews could take over.
The collision at Stryker Soccer Complex
The driver was identified as a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas. Police reported that she remained inside the truck after it careened across the grass, cooperating with officers and later being placed in custody. Two juveniles were also seated in the vehicle at the time of the impact.
Witnesses described the truck as a black pickup that traversed the western end of the field before stopping approximately 100–200 yards down the pitch. The vehicle’s path cut through the playing area, striking players, coaches, and spectators alike.
Victims and emergency response
Emergency personnel confirmed that two individuals died on site: a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man both residents of McPherson, Kansas. Eleven additional people were transported to local hospitals; five of the injured are children ages five to nine, while the remaining six are adults ranging from 28 to 68 years old. All reported injuries were classified as “traumatic” varying from superficial bruises to extremely severe wounds.
Captain Aaron Moses of the Wichita Police Department praised the rapid response of citizens who “sprang into action so quickly and gave life-saving assistance until the arrival of first responders.” Their quick thinking undoubtedly saved lives while paramedics worked on the scene.
Investigation and official statements
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan emphasized that investigators have already spoken with more than thirty witnesses and are reviewing video submissions from the public. “We know what happened, but now we’re working very hard to find out why it happened, and we’re not there yet,” he said.
Mayor Lily Wu addressed the community, stating, “Tonight, Wichita grieves together” and describing the day as “heartbreaking.” Kansas Governor Laura Kelly also released a statement, expressing condolences: “My condolences go out to the families of the victims, the survivors, and all those impacted by this event.” The city announced that all activities at the complex are cancelled until further notice.
The Stryker Soccer Complex issued a brief message, saying it is “praying for those affected” and keeping the injured, families, and witnesses in its thoughts. As the investigation continues, officials urge anyone with additional photos or video footage to submit it through the police-run portal.
