Paramilitary group gains control in el-Fasher

The situation in el-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, is increasingly dire as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have seized control of the city. The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the mass killings and atrocities reported in the area, highlighting a rapidly deteriorating humanitarian crisis.

The RSF has allegedly compelled the Sudanese army to withdraw, resulting in widespread chaos and destruction in el-Fasher. During an emergency session of the Security Council, UN officials issued a stark warning, describing el-Fasher as a site of unimaginable horrors.

Humanitarian crisis deepens

During a recent Security Council meeting, Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, described the situation as “horrifying.” She highlighted that the UN Human Rights Office has received credible reports of mass killings, summary executions, and brutal searches targeting civilians attempting to flee the city. “There is no safe passage for civilians to leave el-Fasher,” Pobee stated, emphasizing the severe challenges faced by the residents.

Tom Fletcher, the UN humanitarian chief, supported these claims, indicating that the city has experienced catastrophic levels of human suffering. He noted that reports of widespread executions have emerged since the RSF’s incursion, with civilians enduring extreme violence, including sexual assault and physical mutilation.

Displacement and suffering

The escalation of violence has led to a severe humanitarian crisis in surrounding areas. Following the RSF’s takeover, more than 36,000 individuals have fled el-Fasher, seeking safety in Tawila, located approximately 70 kilometers away. This town already hosts around 650,000 displaced people, complicating the delivery of essential aid.

Fatima Abdulrahman, a survivor from el-Fasher, shared her painful story, recounting the shelling that has shattered her family. “Shelling killed my daughter, injured my other daughter’s eye, and paralyzed my son,” she stated, underlining the physical and emotional toll of the violence. Such accounts underscore the urgent need for humanitarian assistance in a region increasingly burdened by conflict.

Broader implications of the conflict

The control of el-Fasher by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) raises significant concerns regarding Sudan’s future. This situation recalls the country’s previous division, which led to the establishment of South Sudan. The current conflict, which began in due to escalating tensions between the military and the RSF, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced over 12 million people.

Sudan’s ambassador to the United Nations, Al-Harith Idriss Al-Harith Mohamed, highlighted that the violence in el-Fasher is part of a broader trend of ethnic cleansing and systematic oppression perpetrated by the RSF since their rebellion commenced. He urged the international community to acknowledge the gravity of the situation, asserting that the events unfolding in el-Fasher fit the legal definitions of genocide.

Calls for international action

Al-Harith Mohamed has called on the United Nations to designate the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as a terrorist organization. He also urged for sanctions against any external entities that provide support to the RSF. He expressed concern, stating, “Women and girls are attacked in broad daylight,” which raises doubts about the effectiveness of international efforts to protect vulnerable populations.

As violence continues, aid workers in Tawila report fears of an imminent crisis due to a shortage of food and medical supplies. Mary Brace, a technical protection advisor for Nonviolent Peaceforce, remarked, “The conditions are catastrophic,” underscoring the difficulties faced by those delivering aid amid ongoing conflict.

The situation in Sudan remains critical, with the humanitarian crisis likely to escalate as more individuals flee the violence in el-Fasher. Immediate action from the international community is essential to address this urgent crisis effectively.
