The Middle East conflict has taken a grim turn as Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks in Jordan resulted in the deaths of two US service members, with one still missing. This latest incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran.
The US Central Command (Centcom) reported that four other US service members were medically evacuated but have since been discharged. Jordan’s military intercepted 10 Iranian missiles, preventing any reported damage. The identities of the fallen service members have not been disclosed, and the exact location of the attack remains undisclosed.
The Rising Toll of the Conflict
The death toll for US service members has now reached 16, with more than 500 injured across the region. The conflict, which began in late February, has seen thousands of casualties. The US and Iran had struck a preliminary deal to end the war in mid-June, but the agreement collapsed within a month.
In response to the deaths, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth expressed condolences and resolve, stating, “Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve.” The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have destroyed two US fighter aircraft at Al-Azraq base in Jordan, though Centcom declined to comment further.
Escalating Attacks and Retaliations
Friday marked the seventh consecutive night of US strikes on Iran, targeting military infrastructure and capabilities. The US has also reimposed a blockade on Iranian ports. In retaliation, Iran has struck US allies in the Gulf, including Jordan, and declared the Strait of Hormuz closed.
Both parties have been accused of striking critical infrastructure. The US denied Iranian accusations of hitting bridges, a train station, and an airport, asserting that it had exclusively targeted military sites. However, BBC Verify confirmed an attack on a bridge in Hormozgan province.
International Reactions and Statements
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei issued a statement criticizing the US, calling it “the Great Satan” and warning of “unforgettable lessons in store” for its American enemy. Khamenei has not been seen in public since the start of the war. The Gulf Cooperation Council accused Tehran of deliberately Targeting Civilian infrastructure, labeling such actions as “war crimes.”
The US Department of State advised Americans in the region to monitor the news for breaking developments and exercise increased caution due to heightened tensions. The conflict shows no signs of abating, with both sides engaged in a dangerous escalation that threatens regional stability.
