The USS George Washington, based in Japan, is the Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier and has recently completed a port call in Da Nang, Vietnam.
The decision to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln was part of a regularly scheduled deployment, but it has gained urgency due to reports of sailors struggling with the strain of the lengthy deployment. Families of the crew members have expressed their concerns to the Pentagon, highlighting issues such as food shortages, inadequate air conditioning, and poor living conditions. Some family members have even reported attempts by crew members to jump overboard.
The USS Abraham Lincoln’s Extended Deployment
The USS Abraham Lincoln deployed in November and was sent to the Middle East in January to support U.S. and Israeli military operations against Iran. Normally, aircraft carrier crew members get port visits every 30 to 45 days, but operational needs can disrupt these plans.
President Donald Trump addressed the reports of poor conditions on the USS Abraham Lincoln, claiming that families of service members are not concerned. He also confirmed that a new aircraft carrier is headed to the Middle East to replace it. ‘That ship is moving,’ Trump said when a reporter brought up the USS Lincoln. He further stated that the deployment has not gone on for too long, saying, ‘No, no, not nearly long enough.’
Congressional Attention and Pentagon Response
The issue has drawn congressional attention, with U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal raising concerns in a letter to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao. Blumenthal highlighted reports of shortages of basic supplies, water contamination, plumbing issues, deteriorating mental health, deck safety concerns, and disruptions in the mail system. Rep. Marlin Stutzman also plans to seek a report from the Pentagon and the Trump administration detailing conditions aboard the ship and plans to address them.
In response to the concerns, a U.S. official stated that there has not been an increase in suicidal ideations or attempts aboard the ship. The official emphasized that the Navy takes every service member’s well-being seriously and has religious, medical, and mental health professionals available to assess and address concerns as they arise. The USS Abraham Lincoln has five chaplains, one clinical psychologist, one clinical social worker, three behavioral health technicians, and an embedded integrated prevention coordination counselor.
The USS George Washington’s Role
The USS George Washington has been operating in the South China Sea and recently finished a port call in Da Nang, Vietnam. The carrier is now headed to the Arabian Sea to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln. The USS George H.W. Bush is also deployed to the Arabian Sea as part of the campaign to pressure Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, where hundreds of ships are bottled up by the conflict.
