The pilots, employed by Helicopter Transport Services and contracted by the US Forest Service, were responding to the Widemouth 2 fire, which has already consumed over 114,600 acres (46,400 hectares) of land. As of Saturday, the fire was 24% contained, a slight improvement from the previous day’s report of 105,000 acres burned.

The National Interagency Fire Center has reported that the pilot and crewmember aboard the crashed helicopter were fatally injured.
