Vancouver police release footage of distraction theft involving 88-year-old victim

The Vancouver police have released video footage of a distraction theft that occurred in East Vancouver on Tuesday afternoon. The incident, which took place near the intersection of Kaslo Avenue and East Hastings Street involved an 88-year-old woman who was targeted while selling Playland and PNE parking on her private property.

Incident details and suspect descriptions

The footage shows a dark-coloured, four-door Kia Soul pulling up beside the victim. A woman seated in the back of the vehicle, accompanied by two children, appeared to be seeking assistance. As the elderly woman approached the vehicle, the suspect grabbed her wrist and engaged her in conversation, effectively distracting her. During this interaction, the suspect swapped the victim’s two gold necklaces—one of which featured a jade—with fake jewelry.

The suspect vehicle then fled the scene. The female suspect was described as wearing a white T-shirt while the driver was identified as a man. Police believe this incident is connected to another distraction theft reported in Vancouver on the same day, as the suspect and vehicle descriptions are similar.

Police appeal for witness information

Const. Megan Lui of the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) urged anyone who may have witnessed the theft or seen the suspects before or after the incident to come forward. The police are hopeful that the released video footage will help identify the individuals involved and recover the stolen family heirlooms.

The VPD has emphasized the importance of community vigilance in preventing such crimes. They encourage residents to be cautious and report any suspicious activities to the authorities promptly. The incident serves as a reminder of the cunning tactics employed by thieves and the need for increased awareness and security measures, especially for vulnerable individuals.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing, and the VPD is committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice. The case number for this incident is 2026-126190.
