The Role: A Deep Dive into Washington Politics
As a Washington Correspondent, you will be at the forefront of political journalism, responsible for breaking exclusive stories and providing insightful coverage of legislative battles, policy shifts, and key political figures. Your responsibilities will include reporting and writing breaking news, landing interviews with influential power brokers, and staying ahead of political developments in real time.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of breaking news, cultivating sources, and delivering high-impact reporting. Experience in covering the White House, Congress, and building sources within various administrations is highly desirable. Strong editorial judgment and the ability to write under tight deadlines are essential.
Key Responsibilities
Your day-to-day tasks will involve a mix of investigative journalism and fast-paced news reporting. You will be expected to:
- Report and write breaking news and enterprise stories on DC politics and government actions.
- Land interviews with key figures in DC politics, from lawmakers to lobbyists.
- Cover legislative battles, policy shifts, elections, and key political figures.
- Break exclusive stories and find fresh angles on widely covered issues.
- Build and maintain a strong network of sources within the political landscape.
- Stay on top of political developments and file timely, accurate copy.
- Use public records, FOIA requests, and social media to surface and verify stories.
- Work closely with editors and colleagues to produce fast, engaging coverage across digital and social platforms.
Requirements: What It Takes to Succeed
To excel in this role, you must have a minimum of seven years of newsroom reporting experience, with a focus on DC or political coverage. Experience writing about the White House and Congress, as well as building sources within various administrations, is crucial. Strong editorial judgment and writing skills under tight deadlines are non-negotiable.
Proficiency in using digital tools, FOIA requests, and open-source reporting techniques is highly valued. On-camera experience and comfort presenting stories across platforms are strongly preferred. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and irregular hours as news demands is also required.
