Just this past Sunday, reports began circulating about cougar sightings, especially around the Blackcomb side of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. In response, officials at Whistler Blackcomb made the tough call to close the Ascent Trail, along with several bike trails and both the Creekside and Garbanzo Zones.
These closures are crucial as conservation officers work to investigate what’s going on.
One particularly alarming incident involved a young family who found themselves in a dangerous situation. A woman hiking on the trail was confronted by two cougars—one above her and another below.
The family shared how the woman used her hiking poles to make noise, hoping to scare the cougars away. Thankfully, they all managed to leave the area safely, thanks to the family’s quick thinking and their pepper spray.
Public Safety Measures and Wildlife Management
Conservation officers are keeping a close eye on the situation, although they haven’t located the cougars just yet. Sergeant Chris Boyle from the BC Conservation Officer Service highlighted the importance of public safety during these encounters. He pointed out that, while no one was injured, the cougars got dangerously close to bikers, with one of them actually pursuing a biker for about 300 meters!
Given these events, conservation officials are being cautious about relocating the cougars since they’re already in their natural habitat.
They’re hopeful that the cougars will eventually move on themselves. However, the frequency of these encounters has raised eyebrows among wildlife experts. Boyle brought up previous incidents at Rubble Creek in Garibaldi Park, suggesting that this might be part of an unusual trend for the area.
