Over time, the couple’s assignments escalated. They were instructed to set up spy cameras near police stations and along railway lines used for transporting Western military aid into Ukraine. Eventually, they were tasked with identifying and reporting on air defense systems in the Kyiv area. Bohdan admitted he began to suspect they were working for the enemy after their initial assignments, yet he chose to ignore the implications, hoping for a positive outcome.

Olena noted, “The individuals we were dealing with made it clear that backing out was not an option.” The SBU has reported that this type of coercion is not uncommon, as Russian operatives often exploit vulnerable individuals, offering financial incentives for dangerous tasks.

Since the onset of the war, the SBU has investigated over 24,000 cases related to national security, with more than 4,100 classified as treason. Currently, more than 2,300 cases are actively being processed in the courts.
