A little boy was riding his bike on a sidewalk near North Chambers Road and East 13th Avenue when he was struck, according to Aurora police.

The 11-year-old boy is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a drunk driver struck him and dragged him and his bike under his car, Aurora Police (APD) said.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m.

Thursday near North Chambers Road and East 13th Avenue, police said.

APD said its initial investigation showed the boy was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk southbound on North Chambers Road when he used the crosswalk to cross 13th Avenue, and a GMC Jimmy pickup truck traveling westbound struck him.

Police said Hector Eduardo Garcia, 32, was driving the truck. After hitting the boy, he turned right and continued northbound on Chambers Road, dragging the boy and his bicycle under the truck a “considerable distance.”

When the driver stopped, witnesses said they saw bystanders lift the boy’s car and some women pulled him out from under the truck, police said.

APD arrested Garcia on suspicion of several cases, including: vehicular assault, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended license, failure to yield to a pedestrian.
