The early hours of July 3, 2026, brought devastation to a remote area near the border of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces in Pakistan. A speeding, overcrowded passenger bus plunged from a highway into a rocky ravine, resulting in a tragic loss of life and numerous injuries.
The bus, traveling from Quetta to Peshawar was carrying not only its own passengers but also those from another bus that had broken down. This overcrowding, combined with the driver’s reckless speed, led to the catastrophic accident. Rescue teams from both provinces have been working tirelessly to retrieve the victims and provide medical assistance.
The Scene of the Tragedy
The accident occurred in the Dhana Sar area, a rugged mountainous region that posed significant challenges for rescue operations. The bus fell approximately 70 to 80 feet (21 to 24 meters) into the ravine, making it difficult for emergency workers to reach the wreckage. The rescue teams, backed by paramilitary forces, had to climb down a steep mountainside to the ravine, which was up to 25 meters (80 feet) deep.
Rescuers used cutters and machines to retrieve bodies and injured people from the bus. The injured were carried on stretchers, while the deceased were transported in makeshift carts. The difficult terrain and the depth of the ravine made the operation painstakingly slow and arduous.
Investigation and Condolences
A police official, Mohamed Nasir suggested that speeding was a likely cause of the crash. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact reason behind the accident. Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari expressed sorrow over the crash, offering condolences to the families of those killed and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
The tragedy has sparked a wave of grief across Pakistan, with relatives frantically calling emergency services, hospitals, and local police seeking information about their loved ones. One of the injured survivors recounted that some passengers protested after the driver stopped to pick up people from the other bus, leading to an argument and ultimately the loss of control.
The Ongoing Struggle with Road Safety
Road accidents are all too common in Pakistan, often due to weak traffic enforcement lawsspeedingpoor road safety standards and reckless driving. This recent tragedy underscores the urgent need for improved road safety measures and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
In May, a similar accident occurred when a minibus rammed into a bus parked along a motorway in northwest Pakistan, killing 17 people and injuring five others. These incidents highlight the persistent dangers on Pakistan’s roads and the need for comprehensive solutions to prevent such tragedies in the future.
