A 9-year-old boy is fighting for his life at Texas Children’s Hospital after attending the Astroworld Festival on Friday with his father, who lost consciousness during an avalanche of people, the boy’s grandparents said.
The boy, Ezra Blount, is currently in an induced coma with damage to his internal organs, including his lungs, kidney and heart, the family said.
Doctors said the boy went into cardiac arrest, which caused his brain to swell.
A hospital spokesman said they could not give details about the boy’s condition. KTRK-TV was the first to report the hospitalization.
Bernon Blount said the boy’s father, Treston, hoped the music festival would be a bonding experience.
Ezra had traveled to the show from Dallas, where he lives with his mother, while his father traveled from Tyler, he said.
He falls off his father’s shoulders
Treston placed the boy on his shoulders during the concert when the crowd began to press against his body, Bernon Blount said.
The father lost consciousness and passed out. When he awoke later that night, the child was gone. The grandparents later helped locate Ezra at Texas Children’s.
“The family and I are struggling with this,” the grandfather said. “We are struggling as we look at our grandson’s injuries and what he had to go through to receive those injuries.
We are hurt and disappointed that the city would allow an event like this to happen and people to die. We just want to know who is responsible.”
Doctors say the boy will likely need lifelong care because of the incident, said grandmother Tericia Blount.
