In 2018, I sold my Nintendo Switch, convinced that my gaming days were behind me. The hybrid console had initially piqued my interest with its sleek design and appealing marketing, but my brief return to gaming fizzled out quickly. Fast forward to 2026, and a single game has managed to reignite my passion for gaming and even prompted me to purchase a PS5. That game is 007 First Light.

As a lifelong fan of the James Bond franchise, I had high hopes for previous Bond games, but none had managed to capture the essence of the films or the excitement of my childhood gaming memories with Goldeneye 64. However, everything changed when I attended the world premiere of 007 First Light at BAFTA in London. The game’s cinematic graphics, immersive gameplay, and passionate presentation by the creative team and cast left me hooked.

The Cinematic Experience of 007 First Light

The graphics in 007 First Light are nothing short of stunning. The game’s visuals are so lifelike that it feels like watching a film. The cast, including Patrick Gibson as a younger James Bond, delivers performances that are as authentic as those in the movies. The game’s tutorial, a slickly edited training montage, sets the tone for a campaign that expertly balances style and substance.

The story of 007 First Light is an origin tale for Bond, portraying him as a new MI6 agent. The contemporary narrative threads, particularly those involving AI, add a layer of depth and relevance to the game. The campaign is filled with all the elements that make Bond, Bond: classy social events, fabulous locations, absurd action spectacles, and quality one-liners.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Developed by IO Interactive, the creators of the Hitman series, 007 First Light offers a variety of gameplay options. Missions can be completed through stealth, disguise, or outright violence, although they are not as open-ended as those in Hitman. The game’s environments are full of options for navigating hostile territory, and taking note of one’s surroundings is often rewarded.

The Q-Watch is a mandatory gadget that allows Bond to remotely hack electronics to distract and eliminate guards. Other gadgets, such as smoke grenades, blinding lasers, and concussion mines, offer unique methods of distraction and neutralization. The Bluff ability allows Bond to talk his way past enemies, adding a layer of roleplaying to the game.

Post-Launch Support and Future Content

007 First Light has received impressive post-launch support, with a year-one roadmap that includes new TacSim challenges, a new gadget, New Game+, and a photo mode. A story DLC centered around Bawama, the pirate king warlord played by Lenny Kravitz, has also been teased. The game’s strong word of mouth and critical acclaim have led to estimates of over 2 million copies sold in its first week.

The success of 007 First Light has set the stage for a sequel, although it will not be self-published by IO Interactive. Amazon is expected to play a larger role in future Bond games, handling publishing for any sequels to First Light.

For the first time in years, I am excited to pick up a controller again. 007 First Light has proven that video games can offer an entertainment experience on par with the cinema, and I am eager to see what the future holds for this franchise.
