The political landscape in Texas is undergoing a significant shift, particularly among Hispanic business owners. A recent survey conducted by the United States Hispanic Business Council has unveiled a notable change in voting preferences, with Democratic nominee James Talarico leading Republican Ken Paxton by a 7-point margin.
This shift comes amidst growing concerns over the Trump administration’s deportation practices and the escalating cost of living. The survey, first shared with Politico highlights the impact of these issues on the business community and their voting behavior.
Immigration Policies Fuel Voting Shift
The survey indicates that the Trump administration’s immigration policies are a major factor in the shifting support. Javier Palomarez president and CEO of the United States Hispanic Business Council, emphasized the debilitating effect of deportations on small businesses. “The fear factor that it creates, the disruption that it creates, the environment that it creates, is debilitating,” Palomarez stated. He explained that even the deportation of one employee can significantly impact the morale and operations of a small business.
The survey found that seven in ten Hispanic business owners reported that their businesses had been affected by Trump’s tariffs. Additionally, one in five business owners said they had experienced the deportation of an employee in the past year. The sectors most affected by these deportations include food services, tourism and hospitality, construction, automotive, and manufacturing.
Cost of Living Unites Voters Across Party Lines
Beyond immigration, the rising cost of living has emerged as a unifying issue among voters. The survey revealed that 61% of Republicans60% of Democrats and 60% of Independents listed it as one of their top three concerns. This shared priority suggests that economic issues are playing a crucial role in shaping voting decisions.
Interestingly, the survey also found that almost one quarter of those who supported Sen. John Cornyn over Paxton in the Texas GOP primary for Senate now plan to back Talarico. However, over half of the respondents still intend to support Paxton.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the concerns of Hispanic business owners in Texas are becoming increasingly influential. The survey underscores the importance of addressing both immigration policies and economic issues to garner support in this critical voting bloc.
