Police said they received a call around 4:30 a.m. reporting that someone inside the house had shot at what they thought was an intruder, as moments earlier the security system had been activated.

The call was made by the mother of Janae Hairston, the young woman who was killed. In the call, reportedly accessed by the Columbus Dispatch, Hairston’s distraught father could be heard asking what his daughter was doing and asking her to wake up. Police arrived five minutes after the call was made. Janae was transported to Mount Carmel Esta Hospital, where she died an hour later.

Police are still investigating the case in a city where seven homicides have been reported in a week, three of them in the last three days. Throughout 2021 there were more than 200 violent deaths.
