The small town of Senatobia, Mississippi, is grappling with the aftermath of a tragic incident that has left a one-year-old boy dead and a community outraged. The fatal shooting of Kohen Wiley during a police response to an alleged shoplifting incident at a local Walmart has reignited tensions between law enforcement and Black residents, sparking protests and calls for greater police accountability.
The incident, which occurred this week, has drawn the attention of civil rights advocates and legal experts, who are urging a thorough investigation and the release of all relevant body camera and surveillance footage. The shooting has also highlighted a pattern of problematic interactions between Black residents and police in Senatobia, with community members pointing to similar incidents in recent years.
The Fatal Shooting and Its Immediate Aftermath
According to authorities, law enforcement officers responded to a shoplifting call at the Walmart on U.S. 51. Upon arrival, officers encountered two adults and a juvenile child fleeing from the store into a vehicle. The police statement claims that the driver drove in the direction of the officers, nearly striking one, which led to an officer discharging their weapon. The vehicle then fled the scene, and the occupants arrived at a local hospital, where Kohen Wiley was pronounced deceased, and another adult suffered critical injuries.
The Senatobia Police Department has stated that it is committed to full transparency and is investigating the officer’s involvement in the shooting. The officer in question has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety has also gotten involved, with Commissioner Sean Tindell urging residents to be patient as the agency conducts its independent investigation.
Community Outrage and Calls for Justice
The death of Kohen Wiley has sparked outrage and protests in Senatobia, with community members gathering to demand justice and accountability. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing the Wiley family, has called for a full investigation and the release of all body camera and surveillance footage. Crump has also disputed the police’s account of the incident, stating that Kohen’s mother was trying to communicate to officers that there was a baby in the car before they fired their weapons.
Bernice King, the daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., has also weighed in on the incident, stating that the shooting represents a moral collapse in policing. She argued that the incident highlights the devaluation of Black lives, with law enforcement prioritizing the protection of property over the safety of children. Protesters have echoed these sentiments, with some expressing their frustration and anger at the lack of accountability for police officers involved in similar incidents.
A Pattern of Problematic Interactions
The shooting of Kohen Wiley is not an isolated incident in Senatobia. Community members and advocates have pointed to a pattern of problematic interactions between Black residents and police, with some incidents involving the use of excessive force. Last year, an officer threatened Breshari Faulkner with a Taser and pulled her from her car onto the ground during a confrontation over a handicapped parking space in the same Walmart lot where Kohen was shot.
In 2026, a Senatobia officer was fired for his role in arresting a 10-year-old Black boy who had urinated in a different parking lot. The boy’s family settled a federal lawsuit with the city earlier this year. These incidents, along with the shooting of Kohen Wiley, have led some community members to question the training and accountability of the Senatobia Police Department.
As the investigation into the shooting of Kohen Wiley continues, the community of Senatobia is demanding answers and justice. The tragic incident has once again brought to light the ongoing tensions between law enforcement and Black residents, with many calling for systemic changes to prevent similar incidents in the future.
