Revitalizing Langley: The impact of construction on local businesses
In the heart of Langley, a significant transformation is underway, but not everyone is celebrating. The Fraser Highway One-Way project, which commenced earlier this year, aims to enhance infrastructure, utilities, and public spaces.

However, the reality for local businesses is far from rosy. As construction disrupts the flow of traffic and access, many business owners are feeling the pinch.

Construction woes: A struggle for survival

Jordan Brown, the general manager and chef at Steven’s Cocktail Corner Bar, expressed the frustration felt by many.

“We anticipated a slowdown, but the impact has been much worse than expected. Our sales from Monday to Thursday have essentially vanished,” he lamented. The demographic that frequented his establishment—primarily elderly patrons—has been particularly affected. With sidewalks torn up and accessibility compromised, many are unable to navigate the area safely.

Brown estimates that his business has seen a staggering decline of 40 to 50 percent over the past six months. The noise and chaos of construction have also deterred customers from lingering, as noted by Asher Durkee from nearby cafe Projekt Blend.

“The sounds of machinery make it uncomfortable for customers to stay,” he said, highlighting the broader impact of the project on the local economy.

City’s response: Balancing progress and disruption

The City of Langley acknowledges the challenges posed by the construction.

David Pollock, the director of engineering, parks, and environment, stated, “We understand the disruption to the community. However, we believe that once completed, this project will create a pedestrian-friendly environment that attracts more visitors.” The city has committed to keeping the project on budget and on schedule, with completion expected in early August.

Despite the city’s assurances, the immediate effects on local businesses are undeniable. Many owners are left wondering how long they can sustain their operations amid dwindling sales and customer foot traffic. The balance between necessary infrastructure improvements and the livelihoods of local entrepreneurs is a delicate one.

Looking ahead: Hope for a brighter future

While the current situation is challenging, there is a glimmer of hope for Langley’s business community. Once the construction concludes, the anticipated improvements could lead to increased foot traffic and a revitalized atmosphere. Business owners are cautiously optimistic that the long-term benefits will outweigh the short-term struggles.

As the city works to enhance its infrastructure, it is crucial for local businesses to adapt and find ways to engage with their customers during this transitional period. Creative marketing strategies, community events, and collaboration among businesses could help mitigate the impact of construction and foster a sense of community resilience.
