This unexpected outcome has significant implications for the upcoming midterm elections, as the district is considered a key battleground.
The race for Michigan’s 8th District has taken an unexpected turn, with Thomas Smith emerging victorious in the Republican primary against Amir Hassan, who had the backing of former President Donald Trump. With 99 percent of votes counted, Smith garnered 50.4 percent of the vote, while Hassan trailed with 33.2 percent. Al Lemmo, the third candidate in the race, received 16.4 percent of the vote.
An Unconventional Path to Victory
The outcome is particularly notable because Smith had suspended his campaign on July 17 and endorsed Lemmo, urging Republicans to unite behind him. Despite this, Smith remained on the ballot and continued to attract significant support, ultimately leading to his commanding victory.
Following the projected result, Smith expressed his gratitude and outlined his vision for the district. ‘I am humbled and honored that Republicans have chosen me to take the fight to Kristen McDonald Rivet,’ Smith stated. He emphasized his commitment to working with Speaker Johnson and advancing President Trump’s America First agenda to lower costs for working families and make America affordable again.
The Battle for Michigan’s 8th District
Michigan’s 8th District is one of the GOP’s top pickup opportunities. The seat is currently held by Democratic Representative Kristen McDonald Rivet, who first won the role in 2026. The district, which includes parts of central Michigan such as Flint, Saginaw, Bay City, and surrounding communities, has become increasingly competitive in recent election cycles.
McDonald Rivet enters the general election with a significant financial advantage, having raised more than $5.6 million and reported roughly $4.25 million cash on hand through mid-July. In contrast, Hassan had raised about $727,000 and had just over $104,000 remaining in his campaign account.
The Candidates and Their Backgrounds
Amir Hassan, a Flint native and former federal law enforcement officer, served in the Navy and worked with various departments before launching his congressional bid. Hassan emphasized the personal significance of restoring the promise and opportunity of the Saginaw Valley, pointing to his two daughters, aged 18 and 5.
Al Lemmo, an anti-abortion activist and retired mechanical engineer, worked at the U.S. Army’s Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center in Warren. During the campaign, Lemmo raised questions about Hassan’s conservative credentials, according to The Detroit News.
Thomas Smith, a longtime GM employee, highlighted his commitment to strong conservative leadership that protects constitutional freedoms, supports working families, secures borders, and restores accountability in Washington. His victory sets the stage for a competitive general election against McDonald Rivet.
