The city of Kyiv faced a brutal overnight assault on June 15, as Russian forces launched a massive missile and drone barrage targeting both civilian infrastructure and cultural landmarks. The attack, which also struck the northeastern city of Kharkiv, resulted in at least nine fatalities and left 140,000 households without electricity. Among the hardest hit were the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavraa UNESCO-listed monastery complex, and the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studios.
The Attack on Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavraalso known as the Monastery of the Caves, is a revered Eastern European religious landmark that overlooks the Dnipro River. The complex, which includes an extensive network of underground caves, has been a major Christian pilgrimage site for centuries. During the night of June 15, a Russian kamikaze drone struck the roof of the 11th-century Dormition Cathedralsetting approximately 800 square meters ablaze.
Emergency services and monks worked together to evacuate priceless icons and liturgical relics from the burning structure. The fire, which was eventually brought under control, caused significant damage to the cathedral and other parts of the Lavra complex. The National Reserve Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra announced that the site would be temporarily closed to visitors to ensure the safety of people and the preservation of the monuments.
Damage to Cultural and Residential Areas
The barrage also heavily damaged the nearby Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studiosdestroying its primary costume repository and incinerating an irreplaceable collection of roughly 100,000 garments. The studio’s CEO, Andrii Donchyk, described the loss as devastating, noting that the collection included historically significant wardrobe pieces and cultural artifacts used in landmark Ukrainian films.
In addition to the cultural sites, residential areas across Kyiv were also targeted. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that about 20 people were wounded in the capital, including a child and a pregnant woman. Residential high-rises in the ObolonskyiSolomianskyiand Pecherskyi districts took direct hits, causing fires and structural damage.
The Impact on Kharkiv
In the northeastern city of Kharkiva “double-tap” strike killed five State Emergency Service rescuers. The first responders were targeted by a second drone attack while extinguishing a fire caused by an initial missile strike minutes earlier. At least five additional first responders were injured in the second blast, according to Governor Oleh Syniehubov.
The attack on the Dormition Cathedral was condemned by Metropolitan Epiphanius Ihead of the Orthodox Church of Ukrainewho described it as “a crime against humanity, against history, and against Christianity”. First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko added that the destruction exposed “the true face of Russia’s Orthodox values”.
As the city continues to recover from the attack, the full extent of the damage to Kyiv’s cultural and residential areas remains to be seen. The assault serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict and its impact on Ukraine’s heritage and civilian population.
