Venezuela Earthquake Survivor Rescued Alive After 100 Hours Under Rubble

Hernán Gil's survival against all odds captivates the world as international rescue teams unite to free him from the rubble of a collapsed shopping mall in Catia La Mar.

Venezuela Earthquake Survivor Rescued Alive After 100 Hours Under Rubble

In a remarkable display of human resilience and international cooperation, Hernán Gil was rescued alive after spending eight days trapped under the rubble of a collapsed shopping mall in Catia La Mar, Venezuela. The twin earthquakes that struck on June 24th caused widespread devastation, claiming nearly 2,300 lives and leaving tens of thousands missing. Amidst this tragedy, Gil’s survival story has become a beacon of hope.

The rescue operation, described as “without doubt the most complex and technically difficult” by a Chilean firefighter involved, brought together rescue teams from Venezuela, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico, Portugal, and the United States. Their collective efforts were crucial in freeing Gil more than 100 hours after he was first located under 140 tonnes of rubble.

The Perilous Rescue Operation

The rescue teams faced numerous challenges, including the collapse of access ducts they had painstakingly constructed to reach Gil. These setbacks highlighted the immense dangers posed not only to Gil but also to the rescuers themselves. Despite these obstacles, the teams persevered, ultimately establishing visual contact with Gil overnight.

Footage recorded by a small camera inserted into the rubble revealed Gil wearing a face mask, provided by rescuers to protect him from the dust and debris. A Chilean firefighter could be heard asking Gil to turn his head towards the camera and to don goggles for additional protection. This footage provided a glimpse into the harrowing conditions Gil endured and the meticulous care taken by the rescue teams.

A Cheerful Survivor Amidst the Rubble

Marco Antonio Franco from the Mexican Red Cross described Gil as “a cheerful man” who continually encouraged the rescue teams. Gil recognized his rescuers, expressing gratitude for their presence with the words, “how nice that you came back and that you’re with me again.” Despite the dire circumstances, Gil’s positive attitude and the steady chatter between him and the rescuers about his family and the rescue efforts provided moments of levity amidst the tension.

Remarkably, Gil appeared to have escaped serious injury. Arias, a member of the rescue team, reported that Gil had “not even a crushed nail.” This miraculous escape was attributed to the small concrete booth in the basement of the parking lot where Gil had been on duty when the earthquakes struck. The booth seemingly created a protective shell around him, shielding him from the immense weight of the rubble.

The Aftermath and International Support

The rescue operation underscored the importance of international collaboration in the face of natural disasters. Teams from seven different countries worked tirelessly to free Gil, demonstrating the global community’s commitment to saving lives. The efforts of these teams not only highlighted their technical expertise but also their unwavering dedication and compassion.

As the world watches, Hernán Gil’s story serves as a testament to the power of hope and the indomitable human spirit. His rescue has brought a sense of relief and inspiration to those affected by the earthquakes, reminding us all of the incredible feats that can be achieved through perseverance and unity.
