Russia’s Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov echoed a similar sentiment, calling for the “complete demilitarisation of space”. Recent incidents—such as Russia’s anti-satellite missile test that generated thousands of fragments—demonstrate how quickly the orbital commons can become hazardous.

Experts like Dr. Rod Thornton warn that technologies such as “rendezvous and proximity operations” (RPO) enable satellites to approach, nudge, or even collide with rivals, turning ordinary inspection missions into potential “hunter-killer” scenarios.
