The aviation community is in shock following the tragic crash of an Amazon Air cargo plane at Miami International Airport on Sunday. The Boeing 767-300 operated by 21 Air overshot the runway shortly before 14:00 local time, resulting in a devastating scene that has left the nation grieving.
The aircraft, which had two crew members on board and was arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico struck two vehicles, including a white van carrying seven people and a Toyota Corolla with three passengers. The plane traveled approximately 1,300ft (394m) beyond the runway, causing extensive damage and loss of life.

The crash scene was described as “devastating” by Jennifer Homendy chairwoman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The NTSB has recovered the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, which are being sent to their headquarters for evaluation. Investigators are in the early stages of gathering evidence and have not yet drawn conclusions about the cause of the crash. Key areas of investigation include the flight history, crew experience and training, radar data, aircraft performance, and weather conditions at the time of landing.
One critical aspect of the investigation will be examining whether the runway should have had an engineered materials arresting system (EMAS) designed to slow and stop aircraft that overrun a runway. Homendy emphasized that this will be a “key” part of the investigation. Additionally, the NTSB is appealing to the public for any photographs or videos that could aid in the investigation.
Weather Conditions and Flight Path
Earlier analysis by BBC Verify revealed that there was an active thunderstorm near the airport shortly before the crash, with winds gusting up to 26 knots. This weather condition may have played a role in the flight path of the Boeing 767. Experts suggest that the combination of strong and gusting crosswinds, along with fluctuating conditions from the thunderstorm, could be an early focus for the NTSB investigation.
