Breel Embolo’s U.S. Travel Delay Threatens Switzerland’s World Cup Plans

Switzerland's key player Breel Embolo is stuck in Zurich as U.S. authorities review his visa application, raising concerns about his World Cup participation.

Breel Embolo's U.S. Travel Delay Threatens Switzerland's World Cup Plans

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has hit an unexpected snag for the Swiss national team. Star forward Breel Embolo finds himself in a travel limbo, unable to join his teammates in the United States due to a last-minute visa issue. This development has cast a shadow over Switzerland’s preparations for the upcoming tournament.

Embolo, a crucial player for the Swiss team, was initially cleared to travel but faced a sudden setback when his ESTA authorization was revoked just hours before his scheduled departure on Tuesday. The U.S. immigration authorities requested additional checks, leaving Embolo and the Swiss Football Association in a state of uncertainty.

The Visa Conundrum

Adrian Arnold, director of corporate communications for the Swiss Football Association, expressed disappointment over the timing of the issue but refrained from criticizing U.S. immigration policies. “I don’t want to pass judgment on it, but of course we would have preferred for this to have happened earlier,” Arnold told journalists on Wednesday. He acknowledged the restrictive nature of the current U.S. administration’s approach to immigration matters.

The Swiss team spokesperson revealed that Embolo submitted a visa application in person at the U.S. embassy in Bern on Wednesday morning. “The embassy informed us that the application is being processed as a priority. Breel and the team are now awaiting approval so that he can travel to San Diego and join the squad as soon as possible,” the spokesperson stated in a press release.

The Incident in Question

The Swiss Football Association confirmed that Embolo’s travel issues stem from a previous criminal conviction in 2018, which was recently concluded. The U.S. embassy’s enquiries focused on whether any physical violence was involved in the incident, which was not the case. Embolo has traveled to the U.S. before and even scored a goal in a friendly match against the United States men’s team in June 2026.

Team Reactions and Expectations

Embolo’s absence is a significant blow to the Swiss team, as he is one of their most important attacking players. With 24 goals in 86 appearances for the national team, his experience and skill are invaluable. Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel emphasized Embolo’s importance, stating, “He is a crucial player for our team and has a lot of experience.” Another spokesperson, Sergio Affuso, lightened the mood by adding, “It’s not the first time that he’s late,” with a laugh.

The Swiss Football Association remains optimistic about Embolo’s eventual clearance. “We are confident and have received positive signals that the visa application will be treated as a matter of urgency. We also expect that Breel will be able to join the team as soon as possible,” Arnold told journalists. Embolo is currently waiting in Zurich for the necessary clearance to travel to the United States.

The Road Ahead

Switzerland’s first game of the tournament is scheduled for June 13 against Qatar in Santa Clara. The tournament kicks off on June 11 with a match between Mexico and South Africa. The Swiss team is hopeful that Embolo’s visa issue will be resolved in time for him to participate in the World Cup, but the uncertainty lingers.

As the world watches the unfolding drama, the Swiss Football Association and Embolo await the U.S. authorities’ decision, which will determine the fate of Switzerland’s World Cup campaign. The situation serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges that can arise in international sports events.
