Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of the Krasnodar region, where Gelendzhik is located, described the incident as a deliberate attack by the Kyiv regime on the civilian population. He stated that the attack had no connection whatsoever to military infrastructure. Ukraine has not yet commented on the incident, and both sides deny deliberately targeting civilians.
The total number of injured reached 40, with 17 people hospitalized, according to Kondratyev. Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunfire before the explosion, suggesting that air defenses may have attempted to shoot the drone down. However, it remains unclear what the drone was targeting.
The Escalating Conflict
Over the past year, Ukraine has increasingly targeted long-range strikes deep into Russia, hitting energy infrastructure and commercial warehouses. Targeting Civilian Infrastructure
In recent weeks, Ukrainian strikes have specifically targeted warehouses belonging to Wildberries, a large online retailer often referred to as the Russian Amazon. The latest strike hit a warehouse in the Vladimir region, east of Moscow. Dozens of Wildberries warehouses across Russia, many located thousands of kilometers from the Ukrainian border, have been hit.
Kyiv claims that Wildberries depots are used to supply the Russian military, a claim that Moscow denies. However, the platform has sold a variety of military-related goods, such as body armor, until recently, alongside items with both civilian and drone-production applications.
