The 250th anniversary of the United States’ Declaration of Independence was met with unprecedented challenges as a relentless heatwave swept across the East Coast. The extreme temperatures, reaching up to 102F (39C) in Washington DC, led to the cancellation of several major events, including the Independence Day parade and the Great American State Fair.
The National Park Service (NPS) and event organizers made the difficult decision to cancel the parade scheduled for 10:30 am on Saturday after consulting with local authorities and the Trump administration. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an extreme heat warning, making it unsafe to proceed with outdoor activities.
Washington DC’s Great American State Fair Temporarily Shut Down
The Great American State Fair, a highlight of the nation’s capital’s celebrations, was temporarily closed on Friday after 44 visitors were treated for heat-related illnesses. The fair, organized by Freedom 250 reopened at 17:00 local time but faced low attendance and technical issues, including a broken Ferris wheel.
The DC Fire and EMS Department reported that 11 people were transported to the hospital, with 7 cases considered serious. Robin Ardito, an attendee, witnessed a middle-aged woman suffering from heat exhaustion, highlighting the severity of the conditions.
Philadelphia’s Salute to Independence Parade Canceled
In Philadelphia, the Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade one of the largest events of the year, was also canceled due to the extreme heat. Michael DelBene CEO of parade organizer Wawa Welcome America stated, “As much as this decision pains everyone inside our organization, we simply cannot host an event of this size and scale under these dangerous heat conditions.”
The cancellation of these events underscores the widespread impact of the heatwave, which affected millions of people across the East Coast. The NWS reported that over 165 million people were sweltering under record temperatures, with heat index values reaching between 110 and 115F (43-46C).
President Trump’s Schedule Unaffected
Despite the cancellations, President Trump is expected to deliver a speech at the Great American State Fair on Saturday evening. His remarks will follow a series of military flyovers and a record-breaking fireworks display. Earlier on Friday Trump spoke at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, criticizing the “communist menace” in the US.
The extreme heat is expected to persist through the weekend, with temperatures approaching all-time record highs in some areas. The heatwave follows an unprecedented spell of early summer heat across Europe, highlighting the growing impact of climate change. As the world continues to warm, such extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense.
