The political landscape in Ontario is abuzz with controversy as Hardeep Grewal a Progressive Conservative MPP faces scrutiny over alleged election finance violations. The opposition party, the Ontario NDP has raised serious concerns about Grewal’s campaign activities during the 2026 general election and the subsequent 2026 snap election.
Grewal, who represents Brampton East unseated Gurratan Singh of the NDP in 2026 and retained his seat in the 2026 election. However, his political achievements are now overshadowed by allegations of financial impropriety.
Allegations of Undeclared Campaign Advertisements
The NDP has lodged a complaint with Elections Ontario alleging that Grewal failed to declare campaign advertisements in the Punjabi Post a newspaper owned by his father, Jagdish Grewal. The complaint asserts that these advertisements ran from May 18 until election day on June 2, 2026 including during the blackout period when political advertising is prohibited.
Elections Ontario rules permit certain unmodified advertisements, such as lawn signs or long-standing billboards, to remain during the blackout. However, new advertisements in daily newspapers are banned. The NDP’s complaint highlights that half-page advertisements for Grewal appeared in 12 consecutive issues of the Punjabi Post, including on election day itself and the day before.
Grewal has acknowledged the oversight, stating that the advertisements were billed by the Punjabi Post to his campaign but were inadvertently not paid. He has since rectified the situation by paying for the ads and seeking further direction from Elections Ontario.
Integrity Commissioner Complaint
The NDP has also requested an investigation by the Integrity Commissioner alleging that Grewal used his publicly-funded constituency budget to advertise in the Punjabi Post. Grewal admitted that he should have consulted the Integrity Commissioner before placing the advertisements and has since reached out to her office for advice.
The Integrity Commissioner’s office confirmed receipt of the NDP’s complaint but did not specify whether an investigation would be launched. Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles criticized the apparent pattern of entitlement and attempts to hide financial dealings.
Hotel Expense Controversy
Adding to Grewal’s political woes, he has faced questions about claiming over $27,000 for stays in downtown Toronto hotels, despite his constituency office being 43 km from Queen’s Park. Premier Doug Ford condemned the spending, stating that it is unacceptable and that MPPs must be prudent fiscal managers.
Ford pledged that the MPPs involved would repay the claimed amounts, although it is unclear whether Grewal has done so. The controversy has led to the resignation of Stan Cho another MPP who spent $16,000 on hotels despite living just six km from Queen’s Park. Cho admitted that claiming the expenses was a mistake.
