The streets of New Delhi are witnessing a rare and powerful challenge to the government, led by the youth of India. The Cockroach Janta Party, a movement that began as a satirical response to a Supreme Court judge’s remark, has evolved into a nationwide protest demanding education reform and government accountability.
The movement gained momentum after a series of exam leaks and the alleged failures of the education system. Protesters, including students, professionals, and families, are camping at Jantar Mantar, a designated protest site, under heavy police presence. They are determined to stay until their demands are met, including the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The Birth of the Cockroach Janta Party
The Cockroach Janta Party was founded by Abhijeet Dipke, a 30-year-old with a master’s in public relations from Boston University. The name was a mocking response to a comment made by India’s Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant, who compared unemployed young adults to cockroaches. Dipke turned this insult into a symbol of resistance, creating an online collective that quickly gained millions of followers.
The movement’s immediate demand is the resignation of Education Minister Pradhan after a series of exam leaks that affected over 2 million aspiring doctors. The protesters are also demanding compensation for the families of students who died by suicide after hearing they’d have to re-sit an exam that many prepare for over years.
The Government’s Response
The government’s response to the protests has been met with criticism. Police used tear gas and batons to disperse thousands of protesters as they tried to march toward Parliament. Nearly 180 people were injured, including 118 security personnel and 60 protesters. The government has portrayed the demonstrators as villains, with BJP chief Nitin Nabhi stating that they are “people who want to make the country hollow.”
Despite the crackdown, the protesters remain undeterred. Sona Bisht, a 20-year-old student, said, “If the government thinks that doing this with Gen Z, they can stop us, then that won’t happen. We are here talking about education, talking about securing our future.”
The Opposition’s Support
The opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and dozens of his Congress party lawmakers staged a sit-in protest outside prime minister Narendra Modi’s residence, demanding answers for the brutalities against young students. This marked a dramatic escalation in the protests, with several lawmakers fastening zip ties around their wrists in solidarity.
The Cockroach Janta Party’s protests have become a symbol of the youth’s frustration with the government’s handling of dissent and its use of force to respond to protests.
