This shift comes after Mahan’s disappointing sixth-place finish in the primary, despite receiving substantial financial backing. The tech community, known for its strategic investments, is now focusing on Becerra, who has emerged as a strong contender in the gubernatorial race.
Silicon Valley’s Strategic Pivot
The tech industry’s political strategy is often compared to a high-stakes investment game. Just as investors diversify their portfolios, tech moguls diversify their political support to maximize influence. This strategy was evident in the recent primary, where figures like Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan and Snap, Inc. co-founder Evan Spiegel initially backed Mahan.
However, post-primary filings reveal a significant shift. Both Tan and Spiegel have now contributed the maximum allowed amount, $39,200, to Becerra’s campaign. This move is indicative of a broader trend among Silicon Valley’s elite, who are known for their ability to quickly adapt to changing political dynamics.
Key Players and Their Contributions
Los Angeles billionaire real estate mogul Rick Caruso, who also supported Mahan in the primary, has now given the maximum donation to Becerra. Caruso’s contribution, made on June 30, underscores the tech community’s willingness to back a candidate they believe has a stronger chance of winning.
Billionaire Silicon Valley venture capitalist Ron Conway and several of his family members have also contributed over $235,000 to Becerra’s campaign. Conway’s support is particularly notable as he had not donated to Mahan in the primary but had long supported Mahan’s business ventures and political career in San Jose.
The Rationale Behind the Shift
Rich Robinson, a veteran California political strategist, explains the shift in support: “Xavier is gonna be the winner. Get on the train now.” This sentiment reflects the tech community’s pragmatic approach to political investments. By backing Becerra, they aim to secure influence in what they perceive as a winning campaign.
Lisa Pritzker, the ex-wife of billionaire investor John Pritzker, has also contributed $39,200 to Becerra’s campaign. John Pritzker had previously backed Mahan through a third-party political action committee. This further illustrates the fluid nature of political alliances in Silicon Valley.
Diverse Support and Strategic Alliances
The tech world’s support for Becerra is not unanimous, highlighting the diverse political leanings within the industry. For instance, Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale, an early Mahan backer, has seen one of his key business partners, Palmer Luckey, donate to Republican Steve Hilton.
Similarly, Baiju Bhatt and Vlad Tenev, co-founders of the stock trading app Robinhood, have shown divided loyalties. Bhatt donated to Steve Hilton, while Tenev contributed to an outside committee supporting Becerra. This diversity in political support underscores the tech community’s focus on self-interest rather than ideological alignment.
Robinson notes, “These folks are not conservative or liberal; they support anyone who supports them.” This pragmatic approach is driven by a focus on policies that benefit the tech industry, such as pro-AI and pro-housing initiatives.
