The Ohio State Fair transformed into a stage for an unusual competition this year, as legislators, cabinet members, and media representatives stepped into the show ring for the inaugural Buckeye Baa-tle. This unique event, organized by the Ohio Department of Agriculture and the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association paired participants with experienced 4-H and FFA sheep exhibitors for a friendly competition that highlighted the importance of Ohio’s sheep industry.
The event not only provided entertainment but also served as an educational platform, showcasing the dedication and hard work that goes into raising and exhibiting livestock. Participants had the opportunity to learn from the next generation of agricultural leaders, gaining insights into the preparation and commitment required for successful livestock exhibitions.
The grand champions of the Buckeye Baa-tle
The evening of friendly competition culminated in the crowning of State Representative Haraz Ghanbari as the Grand Champion. Ghanbari, representing the 75th District showcased his skills with Shooter a Southdown wether, under the guidance of his youth coach, 11-year-old Millie Culp from Wood County. Culp, an experienced 4-H sheep exhibitor, played a crucial role in preparing Ghanbari for the competition and mentoring him in the show ring.
“Millie was an outstanding coach, and this honor belongs just as much to her,” Ghanbari stated. “Her knowledge, confidence, and dedication reflect the very best of Wood County. Agriculture is woven into the fabric of our county, and our 4-H youth are the future of agriculture.”
The Reserve Champion title went to Kevin Miller Director of Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities. The event highlighted the teamwork and communication skills required to successfully exhibit livestock, as each participant was paired with an experienced youth exhibitor who served as a coach and mentor throughout the competition.
Awards and superlatives
The Buckeye Baa-tle also recognized participants with a series of humorous and heartfelt awards. Director Tia Moretti of the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health received the “Ewe look maaavelous!” award, while Teri Geiger Chief of Staff for Congressman Troy Balderson, was honored with the “Ewe rocked it!” award. Other notable awards included “Ewe were baaad to the bone!” for Congressman Dave Taylor and “Ewe were a natural!” for State Representative Angie King.
These awards not only added a touch of humor to the event but also acknowledged the efforts and achievements of each participant. The Buckeye Baa-tle served as a platform to celebrate the hard work and dedication of Ohio’s sheep producers and the next generation of agricultural leaders.
