This decision comes after Graham Platner the initial primary winner, withdrew from the race following allegations of sexual assault, which he has denied. Jackson, known for his progressive stance, will now face the formidable challenge of unseating the five-term Republican incumbent, Sen. Susan Collins.
The selection process was unprecedented, involving over 600 delegates from across Maine who gathered in Bangor to vote on a new nominee. Jackson’s victory was largely anticipated, as he had secured the support of more than 480 delegates before the convention. His campaign has been marked by a strong progressive agenda, advocating for Medicare for All and the dismantling of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Jackson’s Political Journey and Progressive Agenda
Jackson’s political career began in 2000 when he ran as a Republican for a seat in Maine’s House of Representatives. Although he lost that race, he won two years later as an independent. He later switched to the democratic party in 2004 and eventually became the president of the Maine Senate before leaving the statehouse in 2026. Jackson’s progressive views have been a cornerstone of his political identity, aligning him with Sen. Bernie Sanders and the political organization Our Revolution.
Jackson’s campaign has been characterized by his support for policies aimed at addressing economic inequality and social justice. His call for the abolition of ICE has gained traction, especially in light of recent controversies involving the agency. Jackson’s background as a logger and his upbringing in a poor, rural family have shaped his political narrative, emphasizing the struggles of ordinary Americans.
The Challenge Ahead: Defeating Susan Collins
The road to victory for Jackson will not be easy. Collins, a five-term incumbent, holds a significant fundraising advantage and is a well-established figure in Maine politics. The race is crucial for Democrats, who see Maine as a key opportunity to flip a Senate seat in a state that President Donald Trump lost in 2026. However, Jackson’s campaign has already raised over $1 million since he entered the race, indicating strong support.
Collins has described Jackson as a ‘Bernie Bro,’ suggesting that his progressive positions are too extreme for Maine voters. Jackson, however, remains undeterred. During a speech at the nominating convention, he emphasized the need for unity and solidarity, stating, ‘When the people in power refuse to listen, you have to organize, you have to stand in solidarity, together. And you have to make them listen.’

Following Platner’s withdrawal on July 10, Jackson quickly emerged as the frontrunner. By July 19, most other candidates had dropped out, leaving Jackson as the clear favorite. Our Revolution, initially supportive of Platner, rallied behind Jackson after Platner’s exit. Jackson’s early support from progressives and his extensive experience in Maine politics played a significant role in his nomination.
The nominating convention in Bangor was a historic event, marking the first time Maine Democrats used such a process to choose a nominee. The convention brought together delegates from across the state, reflecting the diverse political landscape of Maine.
