On Thursday, former president Donald Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan to the White House for a formal state dinner. While the arrival was shown live on the administration’s YouTube channel, the event never appeared on any major network. The reason: the White House refused to give CNN full access to the pool coverage that the network normally provides for high-profile White House events.
White House denies CNN the usual pool crew
According to statements from the network, the White House told CNN that it could send a photojournalist and an audio technician, but barred a reporter and a producer from the premises. This restriction applied less than an hour before Xi’s scheduled arrival. CNN is one of five broadcasters—alongside ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox News—rotating the pool video that other outlets use to air White House events. By limiting the crew, the administration effectively prevented any live television broadcast of the dinner on the major U.S. networks.
Other broadcasters stand in solidarity
In response, ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox News have announced they will not provide any pool footage until the White House restores full access to CNN. Their refusal is a direct protest against what they see as a violation of the longstanding pool-sharing agreement. MS NOW another outlet that was barred from the White House just a week earlier for what the president called overly negative coverage, also reported that its journalists were stopped from covering Xi’s arrival.
Trump’s social-media rant and the election narrative
Later that day, Trump posted on his own platform that the lack of television coverage was the fault of “fake news” outlets, claiming they “refused to be there” because they didn’t want credit given to him. He bolstered his argument by citing his 2024 electoral performance, asserting he won every swing state, the popular vote, and 86% of counties. In reality, his popular-vote margin over Kamala harris was just under 1.5%, and his electoral-college edge over Joe Biden in 2020 was a six-vote difference. While he did carry about 85% of U.S. counties, many of those are sparsely populated. Data from Ballotpedia shows that 48.1% of Americans live in counties that voted for Clinton, Biden or Harris in recent elections, whereas only 40.1% reside in the 2,559 counties that have consistently backed Trump.
Legal order versus executive action
A Federal judge issued a ruling before dawn on Thursday ordering the administration to restore the three journalists’ passes. Although the court order was clear, the White House delayed granting the credentials, and the reporters only entered the building after several hours of negotiation. The episode underscores an ongoing legal battle over the president’s authority to ban news outlets from the press pool, a move critics argue infringes on First-Amendment rights.
The YouTube stream of Xi’s arrival garnered a modest 18,000 views, reflecting the limited reach of the administration’s alternative distribution method. As the dinner proceeded without traditional television coverage, the episode highlighted a growing rift between the White House and the mainstream press, raising questions about transparency, the role of court orders, and the future of live coverage for diplomatic events.
