Celebrity Cruises, a premier cruise line under the Royal Caribbean Group umbrella, has recently announced an increase in its daily gratuity rates. This adjustment, effective from July 29, 2026, has left many travelers wondering about the implications for their upcoming voyages and whether other cruise lines will follow suit.
The new gratuity rates are set at $19.50 per person, per day for standard cabins, $20.50 for Concierge and AquaClass cabins, and $24.50 for The Retreat. These changes come as part of a broader trend in the cruise industry, where gratuity rates are periodically reviewed and updated.
Understanding the New Gratuity Rates
The increased gratuity rates apply to all stateroom types across the Celebrity Cruises fleet. Standard cabins, which include Inside, Oceanview, and Veranda staterooms, will see a rise from $18 to $19.50 per person, per day. Concierge and AquaClass cabins will now cost $20.50 per person, per day, up from $19. The Retreat, the most luxurious accommodation option, will have a gratuity rate of $24.50 per person, per day, an increase from $23.
These gratuities are automatic charges that are shared among the dining, bar and culinary teams, stateroom attendants, and other crew members who contribute to the onboard experience. While Celebrity Cruises refers to these as discretionary gratuities, they are generally considered an expected part of the total cruise cost.
Comparing Gratuity Rates Across Cruise Lines
Celebrity Cruises’ new rates place it among the higher-end cruise lines in terms of gratuity charges. For context, other major cruise lines have the following daily gratuity rates as of summer 2026:
- Margaritaville at Sea$22 (the highest rate in the industry)
- Virgin Voyages$20 when pre-paid, $22 when paid on board
- Norwegian Cruise Line$20
- Royal Caribbean$18.50
- Holland America Line$18
- Princess Cruises$18
- Carnival Cruise Line$17
- MSC Cruises$17 for Caribbean and Alaska cruises
- Disney Cruise Line$16
While these rates are subject to change, they provide a snapshot of the current landscape in the cruise industry.
Traveler Reactions and Industry Trends
The announcement of the gratuity increase has sparked mixed reactions among travelers. Some guests have expressed frustration with the timing of the notification, which was sent out on the same day the new rates took effect. This left little opportunity for those who had not pre-paid gratuities to lock in the previous rates.
“Leaving in a week with a family of five. So we effectively just got a last-minute price increase of $52.50” one poster on Reddit described. “Feels like kind of a cheap move for a ‘premium’ cruise line.”
Others have raised questions about the transparency of gratuity distribution, wondering how much of each guest’s individual gratuities actually go to the crew members who provide direct service. This has led some travelers to consider removing automatic gratuities and offering tips in cash to those crew members who provide exceptional service.
“Transparency is needed. Celebrity needs to make a statement about where the money goes. Is it extra for the staff or is it just part of payroll?” another poster commented.
As the cruise industry continues to evolve, gratuity rates are likely to remain a topic of discussion among travelers and industry watchers alike.
