Creative summer ideas to make your season unforgettable

Unlock the potential of your summer with creative themes, engaging challenges, and immersive sensory experiences.

Creative summer ideas to make your season unforgettable

Summer often evokes images of adventure and transformation, inspired by movies and TV shows. However, reality often falls short of these romanticized expectations. Happiness expert Gretchen Rubin shares practical strategies to make the season more fulfilling and memorable.

Rubin, author of The Happiness Project and host of the podcast Happier With Gretchen Rubin offers four exercises to help you get the most out of the summer months. These exercises are designed to bring joy and satisfaction to your season.

Embrace a summer theme

Start by choosing a single word or phrase that captures the feeling you want to embrace this summer. Rubin’s theme for the season is ketchup symbolizing the idea of adding something elevated and fun to her activities. This metaphor encourages her to look for ways to enhance her summer experiences.

My personal theme this summer is juice. It represents taking advantage of the abundance that the season offers, from ripe fruits to enjoyable activities. The goal is to savor the simple pleasures that summer brings, rather than seeking dramatic transformations.

Create a summer bucket list

Compile a list of activities you want to do this summer. This could include anything from riding a Ferris wheel at a summer fair to having more barbecues at your parents’ house. Rubin suggests that some people enjoy a long list with easy tasks to cross off, while others prefer fewer, more ambitious goals.

It’s important to set realistic expectations. If you aim too high, you might get discouraged. Consider what truly excites you and make a plan to achieve it. Whether it’s cleaning out the garage or learning how to swim, your bucket list should reflect your personal aspirations.

Set a fun challenge

Gamify your summer by setting fun challenges. Rubin suggests trying new taco joints or reading five romance novels. Another idea is to create a theme like Freaky Flavor Friday where you try a new and ambitious ice cream flavor every Friday.

A good challenge can make your summer more memorable. Years later, you might look back and say, That’s the summer I discovered creamed corn ice cream. Consider challenges like taking a swim class or rewatching all the best Pixar movies to add excitement to your season.

Take a five-senses portrait

Experience summer through your five senses and reflect on each one. What does summer look like, smell like, taste like, sound like, and feel like? Rubin explains that a five-senses portrait puts you back into the experience, making it more vivid than just looking at photographs.

This exercise can be done for your entire summer or for a specific adventure. You can journal about it, make a collage, draw a picture, or simply have a conversation. The goal is to capture the memories you create and make them last.

When I think of summer, the smell of smoke from an outdoor fire and the taste of toasted marshmallows come to mind. These sensory experiences are what make summer special and worth remembering.
