One person was killed and five others were injured after a small plane crashed early Monday morning at a Texas municipal airport, authorities said.

The tragic crash occurred at about 1 a.m. at the Madisonville airport, about 100 miles north of Houston, television station KTRK reported.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Justin Ruiz told the station that the only fatality was an adult in the crash, which occurred as the plane was attempting to land.

A reporter named Tammy Rose was over the crash site and observed that the small plane was about 300 meters from landing at the airport.

The aircraft, which authorities say was not local, broke in half. It is registered to someone from Kansas City, Missouri.

So far the names of the five injured are unknown and there is only one fatality who was an adult as mentioned above.
